In First Corinthians 10:11 we are told, "Now these thins happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come." We must recognize that the biographical sketch of Eve we find in Scripture is not simply a matter of history, but is written for our instruction. This means her life makes demands on our lives. We must be willing to ask the hard question, "How does this apply to me today?"

Eve was created to help Adam fulfill God's purpose for mankind. She was to be his helpmate for life. Together they would reflect the image of God to all creation, reproduce that image by billing the earth with their descendants, and fulfill God's plan for mankind by ruling over the created realm. From her life we can ascertain that Christianity is a team effort. There are no "Lone Rangers" in the body of Christ!

APPLY As you think about your own life, take a few minutes to evaluate how you are doing at fulfilling God's purposes for mankind.

Satan was successful in getting Eve to doubt the truthfulness of God's word and the goodness of His motives. What are some ways that you are tempted to doubt the truthfulness of what God has said in the Bible?

APPLY If we stray from the truth of God's Word, there are always consequences. Take a few minutes to see if you can think of some of the consequences of sin that you have seen either in your life or in the lives of those you know.

If we are wise, we will learn from Eve's mistakes.

We saw from Eve's experience that the main reason for consequences from our sin is not just the sin itself, but our unwillingness to deal with that sin God's way. What are some ways you have seen this personally or with others?

It was through our great, great, many times great grandparents, Adam and Eve, that we had our introduction to sin. The rebellious tendencies of our nature have their beginning with them. Yet as we have seen this week, there is much we can learn from their mistakes. If we are wise we will learn from how they made their mistakes and guard ourselves from repeating them.

Spend some time with the Lord in prayer right now.

LORD You have created me in Your image---You desire to be seen in me. Yet so many times I choose to go my own independent way. I choose my will over Yours. Guard me, I pray, from mishandling Your truth---from making too much of the limitations Your Word places on me, and too little on the freedoms You give. Help me to trust the truthfulness of everything You say and the goodness of all your motives toward me. Help me to look to Your Word for answers when the enemy sends temptation my way. Most of all, when I do blow it, help me not to hide my sin or blame others for it, but to come back to you and make things right. Thank you for Your love, Your grace, Your forgiveness, and most of all for Your empowerment. Help me to walk with you. Amen.
