Guilt and Shame

Definition:

Two of the most tormenting, destructive, and debilitating things that wounded people experience.

God’s Promises:

He promises us complete deliverance and freedom from Guilt and Shame.

Guilt and Shame

1.  Create a burden that pressures us.

2.  Guilt and Shame causes our days to be filled feeling bad about ourselves for what we have done wrong or what has been done to us.

The Devil screams his lies into our mind.

* Your Fault

* You could have been better

* If you would have been stronger

IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT!!!

Nuggget: (Top of page 66)

1.  People don’t abuse you, misuse you, or even mistreat you because there is something wrong with you; they do it because there is something wrong with them.

2.  They hurt you because they are hurting.

Can’t Recover
Broken and wounded people absolutely cannot recover until they unload the guilt and shame that they carry.

YOU CAN RECOVER!!!

Don’t allow your mistakes to cause you to internalizing the shame and becoming ashamed of ourselves.

THE FEELING OF SHAME keeps us from CONFRONTING AND EXPOSING IT!!!

Page 66 Second paragraph
Joyce’s Testimony
* Guilt and Shame her mother felt about the incent made her not act upon Joyce’s abuse.
* Her mother never confronted and exposed the family intent.
* Her mother internalized it, even at age of 89
* Her mother says that Joyce blames her for the abuse from her father.
* She never forgave herself
* Joyce’s mother carried the guilt and shame.

* LIFE would have been so much better if all of them would have faced the problem.

* Her mother’s Results

    - She ended up with Mental Illness that stemmed from shame and guilt

    - It wasn’t the Mother’s fault but it was her Responsibility

* Taking the easy path now may be the hardest path to overcome later.

* She NEVER RECOVERED - She died at 89 years old

How to Overcome:

A.  Confront them with God’s Help

B.  Confront and Repent and Receive your Forgiveness from God.

C.  Forgive those who have abused or hurt you.

D.  Don’t continue merely feeling guilty and ashamed.

******Your past does not have any power over your present moment unless you allow it to.

----------------------------------------

****. When we run from our responsibility and don’t do what we know we should do, the results become impossible to run away from.

(Running from our problems never works because somehow they seem to be able to OUTRUN US!)

****. You cannot let go of the past until you deal with it.

What is GUILT???
Anger that is directed at ourselves.

FORGIVE OURSELVES
A.  Although Guilt has been removed by the grace of God, we will still suffer with it until we forgive ourselves.

B.  When we begin a new life with Christ, all things from the past are finished, and a new life awaits us.

C.  Don’t let Satan makes you feel guilty!!
D.  That’s how he holds you in bondage.

Guilt will then steal our energy God has given us to live
F.  A constant feeling of guilt leaves us tired and can even make us physically ill.

Guilt 2 Ways

There are only two ways that guilt can settle in your soul and torment you.

       1.  If you have done something wrong and NEVER ASK for forgiveness

       2.  If you have asked for but not received the mercy and forgiveness that God offers you.
